Great Eastern.—Our naval reporter, who went t*.. Europe some time since with the intention of rettnming in the Great East ern, arrived yesterday in the steamship City ot Washington. He visited the huge vessel on the 2d inst., at Southampton, where she is \ying at anchor. She was drawing 22} leet of water for ward, and 24 feet aft, nearly all her coal and pro visions being on board. Although the rates at which cargo would be taken had been well adver tised, only a few tons were sent down to South ampton up to the 2d. The distance covered ^ the vessel, from her jibboom to the flag-stafF could not have been less than 800 teet. That portion of the ship injured in the unfortunate disaster, the particulars ot which are already known, has been repaired; the cabins have undergone a thorough upholstering within the last few weeks; the strength and quality of all the anchors have been tested; and it is presumed that the Great Eastern is now as perfect as she can be made. Steam is applied periodically to the engines, but no extra ordinary difference exists between their perform ance and those of smaller craft. Indeed, it i.s beginning to be conceded by persons well ac quainted with the matter, that sixteen miles an hour is as much as the “big ship” can make on an average. The brass-work about the engine- rooms, as well as everything susceptible of polish on board, is made to shine brightly; but the gen eral fitting up of the chief cabin is not "by any means so gorgeous as a person would expect to find it. The top-masts are all alol't, but only a portion of the canvas was bent on the yards on the 2d. The first impression our reporter felt on seeing the Great Ea.stern, was one of disappoint ment; her proportions being so well sustained throughout; that she does not look near so large, at first sight, as she really is. One of the Bra zilian mail steamers, a vessel of about 2,000 tons, was anchored close by, and looked like an oy-ter- sloop in comparison. Speaking of some American statistician’s comparing the size of Noah’s Ark with that of the Great Ea.stern, an experienced shipbuilder on board observed, that “the V ankee writer” might have added to his article the infor mation—not general!}' known—that “old Nuuh” was the originator of the theory on which all large .steamers have been built for years, viz.: that *>f having them six times as long as they are wide; thdi being the standard according to which the Ark was constructed. The Great Eastern’s length, however, is eijht times greater than the breadth of beam,—a fact worth noticing. Mr. Dunean Dunbar, one of the most extensive shipowners in England, was on board the Great Eastern, and augured favorable of her success in every way. The somewhat-contradictory reasons assigned for not sending the Great Eastern on the 9 th of June, as well as a conviction that bome ether delay would be likely to occur on the 23d, induced our reporter to return without waiting for her. March 14, 1860, 2tf sortcs of' answers were made to the questions pro pounded, none of them correctly, however, except as a blunder. After keeping the poor fellows upon the anxious seat tor su long a time, they were dismissed without the least intimation as to the probable result of the ordeal through which they had passed. This morninjx the applicants were all gathered in the court room, bearing unusual unxious-looking faces, when Mr. Cox arose and read the report of the committee, in substance stating that not a single one of the names present ed was considered worthy to be entered upon the roll of attorneys and counsellors of the Stafe of New york.” Anrfiou Stle of liaijgogi' Lying I. nchiimed. at the St. Xichoias llotrl.—\ novel auction sale —the first of the kind occurring in this city— took place yesterday at the auction rooms of Hen ry B. Herts, in Pine street. A lot f»f trunks, va lises aud carpet-bags, comprising the residuary as sets of absconding and non-bili-paying boarders at the St. Nicholas hotel, since the opening of the establishment, were knocked off to the highest bidders. .\s at the recent auction sales of un claimed packages at Adams k Co.’s Kxyress of fice, the bidders ‘went it blind,’ knowledge of the contents of their purchases not being vouchsafed to them until they had passed up their nauies and ! cash. Kach buyer, as .soon as liis purchase was 1 passed to him, good-naturedly opened the same, and, as may be supposed, some mirthful denoue- nient.^ were the resuh. A large, well-worn trunk that looked as though it might have taken sever al continental tours and ‘rone through the rough usages of one or two military campaigns, led off the lot. Cotnmencing at ‘J.’) cents, the bidding went up spiritedly till it was knocked down at Sl- 25, when on inspection of the contents, if reveal ed to the purcha.ser two pairs of old sJip[H-is and two glazed caps. A trunk of ponderous sixe and weight sold for 75, the conteiits til which proved to be a lot of patent medioinos no det ent j)a])er would advertise, or decent man have occa sion to use. The buyer threw his purchase into the street. -\ carpet-bag, conUiniiig a pair ot pants with one leg—tho loriiier property of a m;^ whom some ini.^'hap had de]>rived .tf utm* cf his leirs l>rL»u'.iht S5 50. A valise sold f'jr S:’, ;')0, the purchaser getting for his money nine cravats ;ind nine dollars. Some ot the trunks, however, were good investments, b»ing filleil with srood wearing apparel. A>i old chest sold for S5, which contained over S'iOU worth of books. A trunk which sold for ?3, had in it, besides a good suit of clothes, a pair of French carzel lamps worth S50. The total product of the sale was alniut SL50, which is said to covcr but a fractional jiait of the indebtedness of the former baggage owners.
